Access Statement

Introduction

Inglestone House is a 4 storey Georgian town house in the very centre of Kelso. Our access statement aims to honestly describe the layout of this quirky, period property and its position in the town. Inglestone House provides step free access at the rear entrance via a ramp, this backs onto The Square in the centre of the town just off Woodmarket. A short, level walk will get you to the Abbey, bus stops and the many independent shops, cafes, restaurants and public houses. You can view a map and directions here.

The rear entrance leads to 2 spacious bedrooms with step free access via a permanent, external ramp. Room 5 has a shower over a bath (no grab rails). Room 6 has an accessible toilet with grab rails, low level sink and a walk in shower (50mm step) with stool but no grab rails.

Arrival and Car Parking

Disabled parking bays for Blue Badge holders are on Woodmarket, in the main square directly opposite the Royal Bank of Scotland. We will gladly help with any luggage. On street car parking spaces are available on Abbey Row, with a further large free car park at The Knowes, a 2 minute walk via a path through the church yard.

Public Transport

 The nearest train station is Tweedbank, Melrose, TD6 9BJ (16 miles)

 This is the start of the line for frequent, direct trains into Edinburgh’s Waverley Station. The journey takes 1 hour. The station is small and step free. Passenger assistance is provides by on-train staff for passengers boarding or alighting. This is a free, pre-bookable services for any passenger requiring help with accessing the train.

From outside Tweedbank the bus number 67 runs to Kelso.

 

By Bus 

 Bus stops are located centrally in the town on Woodmarket and Horsemarket and all less than 5 minutes walk to Inglestone House.

No. 67 (Borders Buses) – runs from Galashiels Transport Interchange to Berwick-upon-Tweed.
From Galashiels alight at Kelso Horsemarket.
From Berwick alight at Kelso Woodmarket.
From both bus stops it is a level 2 minute walk to Inglestone House.
All buses offer step free access and wheelchair user space.

Taxis are available in the main square.

Entrances to Inglestone House

Inglestone House has two entrances with a small alleyway connecting the two streets together.

Main Entrance – Abbey Row

This is our main entrance. Please note Abbey Row is a one way street.

Upon arrival go through wrought iron gate, up 13 steps to the front door where the bell is located on the right hand side. A further 3 steps take you into the porch where the building is secured via keypad entry. To gain entry please ring the bell, on checking-in guests are provided with the secure entry code. Once through the porch guests enter the Reception area  on the first floor, this is where our Breakfast Room is located.  A small fridge is located at Reception where fresh milk is available.

Step Free Entrance – 1 The Square

For guests requiring ground floor rooms (bedrooms five and six), access is available via a ramp at our rear entrance (1 The Square) as shown above. Please ring the doorbell for entry. This entrance is via a door key. There is a large cobbled area outside the rear entrance, this is a shared access with neighbouring properties and is for drop off only.

Bedrooms

Rooms  five and six are located on the ground floor.

 Room 6 – this is our most accessible room. It provides step free access via outside permanent ramp. Extra wide doors to bedroom and en-suite shower room  (77cm these are the narrowest doors). This is a spacious twin room. The en-suite shower room has a comfort height toilet with grab rails, low level sink and mirror. The walk in shower has a low shower tray (50mm step) with a shower stool but no grab rails.

 Room 5 – this also provides step free access via outside permanent ramp. Extra wide doors to bedroom and en-suite bathroom (77cm these are the narrowest doors). This is a very spacious twin room with both a double and single bed (2 persons maximum). The bathroom is very large with a comfort height toilet plus shower over a bath (no grab rails in this bathroom)

 Rooms 1-4 – these are located on the second floor up a generally curving staircase with a hand rail on one side.

 Reception –  located on the first floor and has a small fridge with fresh milk. Fresh milk can be provided in a flask on request for guests in rooms 5 and 6.

 Breakfast Room – located on the first floor. Breakfast can be served in rooms 5 and 6 if required.

 Courtyard Garden – our Courtyard garden is split either side of the main entrance and is unfortunately not step free. There are two steps up to the main gate and then 3 steps down on either side and there are no handrails.
