We love free entry to a historic hidden gem and Torwoodlee Tower  was easy to find using one of the many Scottish Borders Council  books. The “Paths around Galashiels”  guide directs you to start in Clovenfords, follow the easy instructions to arrive at the long , straight old driveway and the tower set in woodland high above a bend in Gala Water. Little remains of the tower built in 1601 by George Pringle, but it’s still impressive and an information board gives an artists impression of what it may have looked like when lived in.  The walk is just under 5 miles and crosses farm, woodland tracks and some minor roads.
